Cultural Master Plan

The City of Reno adopted the Cultural Master Plan in 2012.

2015 Nevada Humanities Award Nominations

Nevada Humanities is now accepting nominations for the 2015 Nevada Humanities Awards for outstanding achievement in and contributions to the humanities. Every other year, the statewide organization presents four awards recognizing individuals and organizations that foster cultural enrichment and deepen our understanding of the human experience by facilitating opportunities for Nevadans to engage with the humanities. In addition to the Judith Winzeler Award for Excellence in the Humanities, Nevada Humanities adjudicates awards to honor outstanding humanities advocacy, teaching, and public programming. Awardees will be honored at a special ceremony in Carson City on March 26, 2015.

"We encourage people from all across Nevada to identify people in their communities who have enriched their lives with literature, history, culture, outstanding teaching, and all elements of the humanities,” commented Christina Barr, Executive Director, Nevada Humanities. “It is the important work and legacies of these people that we want to honor with these awards."

2015 Nevada Humanities Awards:

The Judith Winzeler Award for Excellence in the Humanities recognizes an individual, organization, or business that has made an outstanding and lasting contribution by using the tools of the humanities to strengthen and enhance the lives of Nevadans. The Friend and Champion of the Humanities Award recognizes a business, organization, foundation, or individual for exemplary service in helping to advance the humanities in Nevada through partnership, funding, sponsorship, policy making, or other activities. The Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award recognizes a Nevada educator, administrator, school district, or education program for excellence and innovation in humanities teaching at any level (early childhood, K-12, higher education, lifelong learning). The Outstanding Humanities Project Award honors an outstanding humanities project made possible by a Nevada Humanities grant or partnership for projects that took place between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014.

Nominations may be made by any individual or organization, but only the Outstanding Humanities Project Award can be nominated by the project’s sponsoring organization. All other nominations must come from a third party (individual or organization). Multiple nominations may be submitted in the same or different award categories. Award recipients are selected by members of the Nevada Humanities Board of Trustees. Awardees will be notified in early February 2015. The awards will be presented in a special ceremony in Carson City on March 26, 2015. All awardees must be present to receive their awards.

The postmark deadline for nominations in each award category is January 9, 2015.

New Class at McKinley Arts and Culture Center

Beaux Art Classes – The techniques of the Great French Master Painters, from the 17th century to the present days.

Our program will allow people, over the course of a series of classes, to tame unique techniques, usually reserved for French Art Masters, which have traditionally only been taught in the prestigious French school of art: “Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts”. To guarantee the quality of the classes, the instructor is a true French Art Master, graduated by this famous Art school in 1991. For each class, students will discover a new slice of the French history of Art (Romantism, Impressionism…etc) and the specific techniques of its greatest painters, such as Renoir, Monet, Delatour…

Whatever their level is, this curriculum will benefit every student: The instructor will bring individual attention to each of the students, and will be certain that they are comfortable with their level of knowledge and that they are having fun. After all- being able to express an idea in a clear and beautiful way- is not only rewarding in its end – but it is also fun in its process.

January - August Programming

McKinley Arts and Culture Center - 925 Riverside Drive 334-2417

Saturdays 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

$45 for one class or $150 for 4 classes.
